How to Create a Hacker-Proof Password
By Switch, the I.T. Support Robot

We recently talked about what kind of password not to have. So the question is: How can I create a password that’s secure and that I can remember? Well here’s how:

It needs to be a strong password. But what is a strong password?

  • Has at least 8 characters
  • Does not contain your real name, username, or company name
  • Does not contain a complete word
  • Is significantly different from other passwords
  • Contains characters from the following four categories:
  •       Uppercase letters
  •       Lowercase letter
  •       Numbers
  •       Symbols

However, a password may meet all of the above criteria but still be a weak password. For example: Password15! matches all the criteria but it has a complete word. Pa$$w0rd_15! would be a better alternative because it replaces letters with symbols and numbers.

But how can I remember my password? Try acronyms or abbreviations for something that means a lot to you. For example: My dog’s name is Buddy and you bought him on June, 2012 could become mdniB/Jun,12. Or try “misspelling” your password. M!d0g’[email protected]^ddy. Lastly, you can try relating to something you love. For example: I love to watch football could become [email protected]@11.

If you feel you must write down your password in order to remember it, make sure you don’t label it as your password, and keep it in a safe place.
